There isn’t really a rule that says you can’t apply mascara after you apply your false eyelashes, but it’s a good practice to apply it beforehand. Applying mascara AFTER you apply your false eyelashes can:
- Reduce their usage and the amount of wears you’re able to get out of them
- Become clumpy on the lashes, especially after repeated usage, making them look unnatural
- Increase the risk for an eye infection because you’re unable to clean them to take the mascara off as you would your natural lashes
It’s also important to consider the types of false eyelashes you’re wearing as to whether or not mascara application is a good idea. Our line of authentic, cruelty-free mink lashes are delicate and yield over 25 wears if taken care of properly. Therefore, applying mascara to them will greatly shorten their lifespan and dull their beautiful shine more quickly.
Human hair and synthetic lashes typically give somewhere in the range of 5-8 wears, depending on the lash’s quality. Applying mascara to these kinds of lashes is much more feasible given the short lifespan; however, the reasons noted above still need to be taken into consideration.

A final reason why applying your mascara before applying false eyelashes is a good practice is it helps blend your natural lashes into the false lashes more realistically. Curl your lashes with an eyelash curler and apply a waterproof mascara to help hold the curl. If after you apply the false eyelashes you still find a gap between the false and your natural lashes, use an eyelash curler and exert gentle pressure so as not to damage the false lashes. This will help to fuse the two together for a natural appearance.
Taking the time to maintain your false eyelashes will ensure a lasting relationship with them. And we’d like to know …
